05 okt PRESS RELEASE – REGIONAL SEMINAR ON WOMEN, PEACE AND SECURITY IN SOUTHEAST ASIA
The regional seminar for Southeast Asia hosted by the Parliamentary Forum on Small Arms and Light Weapons (PFSALW) and the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) in Jakarta, Indonesia has now started, taking place between 4-5 October and gathering parliamentarians from the region, diplomatic community as well as representatives of Governments, international organisations and civil society and other relevant stakeholders. The seminar is realised with the generous financing of the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs’ (UNODA) United Nations Trust Facility Supporting Cooperation on Arms Regulation (UNSCAR).
“Strengthening the role of parliamentarians in peace and security decision-making processes, including women parliamentarians, who are often underrepresented in such efforts, is fundamental. Today’s regional seminar is a testament of our collective commitment to advance the WPS Agenda in this region”. – says H.E. Ar. Siti Rozaimeriyanty Dato Haji Abdul Rahman, Secretary General of AIPA.
“The prevention of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW)-related violence is vital for achieving peace and security, including the WPS Agenda, and requires legislative, oversight and awareness raising actions by parliamentarians in Southeast Asia. Moreover, the equal participation of women in such initiatives is vital”– says Ms. Karin Olofsson, Secretary General of PFSALW.
