02 jun UPCOMING –> REGIONAL HIGH LEVEL MEETING FOR THE WESTERN BALKANS ON PARLIAMENTARY ACTION TO PREVENT SMALL ARMS AND LIGHT WEAPONS-RELATED VIOLENCE
On 21-22 June, the Parliamentary Forum on Small Arms and Light Weapons (the Forum) is co-hosting a regional high level meeting for Western Balkans in collaboration with the Regional Cooperation Council (RCC), the South Eastern and Eastern Europe Clearinghouse for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SEESAC) and the Parliament of Albania, in Tirana, Albania.
The high level meeting is entitled “Enhancing parliamentary awareness and action for more peaceful and sustainably developed societies – implementation of the Roadmap for a sustainable solution to the illegal possession, misuse and trafficking of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) and their ammunition in the Western Balkans (Roadmap) by 2024”. It seeks to increase parliamentary commitment, understanding and action on control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) in relation to regional and international frameworks including Roadmap, which builds on the political commitment to the United Nations Programme of Action to Prevent, Combat and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All Its Aspects (UN PoA); and its links to the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda.
The high level meeting is financially supported by the Forum’s donor the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs’ (UNODA) Trust Facility Supporting Cooperation on Arms Regulation Fund (UNSCAR), and SEESAC’s donor, the European Union through its Council Decision 2022/2321 in support of the implementation of the Western Balkans Roadmap and with in-kind contributions from RCC and the Parliament of Albania. Participants to the meeting include parliamentarians and Heads of SALW Commissions from the Western Balkans.
