25 nov INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ELIMINATION OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN- UNCONTROLLED SALW IS A THREAT TO WOMEN’S RIGHTS AND SECURITY
Today on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, Parliamentary Forum on Small Arms and Light Weapons (PFSALW) together with Internationella Kvinnoförbundet för Fred och Frihet highlights the importance of gender equality for achieving sustainable peace in an opinion piece published by Utvecklingsmagasinet.
Every year, more than 17,000 women are killed by SALW-related violence according to the Small Arms Survey. The presence of firearms increases violence against women, both in and outside of conflicts. Therefore, intensified efforts are needed to prevent the uncontrolled proliferation of SALW as to protect women’s security and promote women’s political participation in society.
Today, the international campaign ’16 days of activism’ is launched, encouraging all actors to take action for the elimination of violence against women. Through their legislative, oversight and awareness raising functions, parliamentarians play a vital role in preventing the uncontrolled proliferation of SALW as well as violence against women.
