28 feb WARM GRATITUDE TO ALL WHO JOINED THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE FORUM IN GENEVA, SWITZERLAND!
The Parliamentary Forum on Small Arms and Light Weapons (the Forum) would like to extend its sincere gratitude to all its Members who participated in the Forum’s General Assembly on 15 December 2023, in Geneva, Switzerland. At the General Assembly, the Members provided strategic advice on future priority guidelines to the Board, discussed and approved the Report from the Secretary General since the last Assembly, elected a new Board for the period 2023 – 2025 as well as adopted the Geneva Declaration and approved the revised Statutes of the Forum.
The Geneva Declaration highlights examples of vital parliamentary actions for the prevention and reduction of uncontrolled flows of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) as concluded on in the Forum’s recent relevant activities, based on the three key roles of a parliamentarian on legislation, oversight and awareness raising:
- Legislation: Prioritise the signature and ratification of the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), as well as the Firearms Protocol.
- Oversight: Promote the use of parliamentary control tools to improve the implementation of the ATT and encourage the adoption of related gender responsive public policies and strategies.
- Awareness raising: Disseminate to the public; reports, policy statements and relevant data on SALW-related violence, and the importance of ratification and implementation of the ATT through the media.
