14 sep NOW AVAILABLE: REPORT AND PARLIAMENTARY ACTION PLAN FROM REGIONAL SEMINAR IN LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN ON PARLIAMENTARY ACTION PROMOTING ARMS TRADE TREATY
The Parliamentary Forum on Small Arms and Light Weapons (PFSALW) would like to extend its sincere gratitude to all participants and panellists who joined the regional seminar in Latin America and the Caribbean on June 30-July 1 in Panama City, Panama, as well as warm gratitude to the co-host the Latin American and Caribbean Parliament (PARLATINO). PFSALW also would like to thank the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Canada for the generous financing of the seminar.
At the regional seminar, parliamentary recommendations on actions to take for the implementation and universalisation of the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), linking to the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Agenda were identified and compiled into a regional Parliamentary Action Plan (PAP) for the first time with specific focus on ATT and WPS. Key recommendations on parliamentary actions included:
- Within legislation: Promote the comparative analysis of free trade agreements to identify their coherence with the provisions of the ATT regarding sanctions for the illicit flow of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW).
- Within oversight: Promote the use of parliamentary control tools to improve the implementation of the ATT.
- Within awareness raising: Approach parliamentary leadership (presidents, committee chairmen, group leaders, etc.) to include the issue of signing, ratifying, and implementing the ATT on the agenda.
