The Parliamentary Forum on Small Arms and Light Weapon’s (the Forum) Newsletter is now out! The Newsletter details the Forum’s work in the past months, as well as our ongoing projects and plans for remaining part of 2022 and 2023. Do you want to learn more? The Newsletter can be found here.
Key highlights include:
- On March 10, the Forum co-organised the webinar: “Disarmament that saves lives: Curbing uncontrolled flows of Small Arms and Light Weapons, the role of parliamentarians” together with the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Parliamentarians for Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament (PNND), the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP) and the World Future Council (WFC). The focus of the webinar was to highlight the role, opportunities and challenges that parliamentarians face when combatting the uncontrolled proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW).
- In June, within the Forum’s “Connecting the Dots”-project, financed by the United Nations Trust Facility Supporting on Arms Regulation Fund (UNSCAR), the Forum organised regional seminars in Africa in collaboration with, and at the venue of, the National Assembly of Cameroon and in Asia, Indonesia (Jakarta) in collaboration with the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA). The seminars focused on enhancing parliamentary action for the implementation of the UN Programme of Action to Prevent, Combat and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All Its Aspects (UN PoA) linking to the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Agenda and the 2030 Agenda. A second seminar in Jakarta, financed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Canada, focused on key recommendations on the universalisation and implementation of the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) linking to the WPS Agenda. At the seminars regional Parliamentary Action Plans (PAPs) were adopted.
- The Forum, with sponsoring from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sweden, hosted a side event at the side lines of the Eighth Biennial Meeting of States (BMS8) on the UN PoA in New York, the United States, to present the conclusions from the above-mentioned regional seminars in Asia and Africa.
