17 aug NEW DATA BY SMALL ARMS SURVEY ON FIREARMS RELATED DEATHS POINT TO A POSITIVE TREND- CONTINUED EFFORTS ARE NEEDED FOR THE ACHIVEMENT OF PEACE AND SECURITY
In a recently published brief, Small Arms Survey (SAS) finds that loss of life resulting from global violent deaths decreased between 2016 and 2020. In total, 531,000 people died violently in 2020, of which 40%, 211,000, were killed by a firearm, implying a minor decrease of firearms related deaths compared to the death of 223 000 people in 2018.
While the figures suggest a positive trend, where dedicated efforts on behalf of relevant actors are having a decisive impact on human security and sustainable development, the Parliamentary Forum on Small Arms and Light Weapons is noting the importance of continued and strengthened efforts for the achievement of more peaceful and sustainably developed societies. As pointed out in the brief, the impact of ongoing conflicts such as in Ukraine as well as recent increase in homicide rates in some countries, constitute significant risks to reversing the positive trend. Through their legislative, oversight and awareness raising functions, parliamentarians play a key role in safeguarding and contributing to the work on prevention and reduction of armed violence.
