13 jun A WARM THANK YOU TO ALL WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE REGIONAL SEMINAR FOR ASIA ON JUNE 8-10 IN JAKARTA, INDONESIA
The Parliamentary Forum on Small Arms and Light Weapons (PFSALW) would like to extend its sincere gratitude to all participants who joined us at the regional seminar for Asia on June 8-10 in Jakarta Indonesia, co-hosted with the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA). Warm gratitude in particular to all honourable parliamentarians and panellists who shared their vital experiences and expertise, and to AIPA for the fruitful collaboration.
PFSALW also would like to thank the United Nations Trust Facility Supporting Cooperation on Arms Regulation Fund (UNSCAR) for the generous financing of part I of the seminar, and to Global Affairs Canada for the generous financing of the seminar’s part II.
In part I, updated parliamentary recommendations on actions to take for the implementation of the United Nations Programme of Action on Small Arms and Light Weapons (UN PoA) linking to the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda and the 2030 Agenda were incorporated into a revised regional Parliamentary Action Plan (PAP), which was agreed by the parliamentarians. In part II of the seminar, key parliamentary recommendations for the universalisation and implementation of the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) linking to the WPS Agenda were compiled into a regional Parliamentary Action Plan (PAP) agreed by the parliamentarians.
The key parliamentary recommendations regarding the revised PAP (from the respective PAPs) included:
- Promote a regional Model Law adjusted to the ASEAN context on the topic of preventing uncontrolled proliferation of SALW as to encourage further legislative actions and subsequent applications.
- Follow up with government representatives to ensure that the country is complying with their international reporting commitments, including reporting on the UN PoA.
- Enhance the understanding among parliamentarians on the importance and rationale of ratifying the ATT, including clarifying misconceptions.
The revised PAP and the final report summarising the conclusions from the seminar’s two parts will be available in the near future, follow us on Facebook @PFSALW and on Twitter @ParlForumSalw to stay tuned!
