08 jun PRESS RELEASE: Members of Parliaments Gather for Seminar on Peace-building, Armed Violence Prevention with a Gender Equality perspective
The regional seminar for Asia hosted by the Parliamentary Forum on Small Arms and Light Weapons (PFSALW) and the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) taking place in Jakarta, Indonesia has now started, taking place between 8-10 June and gathering parliamentarians from the region, diplomatic community as well as representatives of international organisations and civil society and other relevant stakeholders.
The first part of the seminar is realised with the generous financing of the United Nations Trust Facility Supporting Cooperation on Arms Regulation Fund (UNSCAR) fund and part 2 is realised with the generous financing of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Canada.
“One of the main goals of AIPA recently is to contribute significantly through inter-parliamentary cooperation in the attainment of the aims and priorities of ASEAN, to contribute towards promoting the ASEAN peace and stability”- states Nguyen Tuong Van, Secretary General of AIPA.
“As the role of parliamentarians needs to be strengthened in international processes related to prevention of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW)- related violence, enhancing parliamentarians’ active engagement and participation is vital as to contribute to more peaceful and sustainably developed societies ” – says Karin Olofsson, Secretary General of PFSALW.
