Daisy Tourné is an elementary school teacher and a social psychologist by profession. She was elected as Member of Parliament for Montevideo for the first time in 1995. During the years 2006 to 2009 she was appointed by President Tabaré Vázquez as Minister of the Interior. In 2009 she returned to her seat as MP and today occupies a seat in the Senate of the Republic. The topics in which she has specialized in her long-term career are: security and disarmament policies; policies on childhood and adolescence; the Uruguayan national initiative ‘gender and new rights agenda’; policies related to labour law.
She is a member of the Parliamentary Forum on Small Arms and Light Weapons since 2004. In 2006 she first held the presidency, which she later had to leave when joining the Executive Branch of Uruguay. With her re-entry to the Parliament, she also resumed her membership and participation in the Forum, being elected as President of the organisation in November 2016.
